Flavored Water: My Evening Routine

I know that kicking a soda, juice, cocktail, venti mocha frappuccino with soy mocha drizzle, matcha powder, protein powder, caramel brûlée topping, strawberries, two bananas, caramel drizzle frappuccino chips and vanilla bean BEVERAGE habit can be a challenge.

I know that remembering to hydrate throughout the day to honor your body, prevent headaches, fatigue, cramps, dizziness and see physical results is a challenge.

I know that DRINKING your calories, just ain't smart.

...So I found a solution that has worked for me, and I wanted to pass it on to you. I LOVE learning about the little quirks, tweaks, hacks and habits of other people, so I hope this helps you get into a hydration habit that you actually look forward to.

I've developed a habit that sets me up for MAJOR success every single day, and it starts with this sweet Rubbermaid carafe that I got at the supermarket (but you can grab one here on Amazon for $8)

She's perfect because she's BEAUTIFUL and FUNCTIONAL (my favorite 2 point test) and holds 2 quarts of liquid. That converts to 64 oz of water in one shot.

It's recommended for MOST people to drink 1/2 your body weight in fluid ounces, so if I down this bad boy in one day PLUS the water that I drink pre, post and during my workouts and throughout the day, I've reached my goal.

But it gets better...

One of my absolute favorite things to do to make water more delicious and exciting is to add fresh mint, lemon and/or lime juice and my favorite tea. Every night before bed I add the tea bags and a few fresh mint leaves (I buy packaged bunch at the grocery store that lasts for a week) and it steeps overnight.

If you ask my husband, one of the most frustrating habits that I have is the amount of tea that I own and that I don't use. I'm sucker for the different flavors that I see on the shelves and rarely drink them hot.

Enter this gorgeous bamboo tea box that I picked up online (you can grab one here on Amazon for about $14). It doubles as a really sweet touch when it comes to hosting friends or family at your house. The only thing better than offering coffee or tea after dinner is pulling out this box from one of your drawers and opening it up with 5-star service.

Lately, I've been going drawer by drawer, cabinet by cabinet in my kitchen and realizing analyzing what I use and what brings me joy (again, the BEAUTY and FUNCTIONALITY test) and I completely overhauled this one extra-wide drawer. I couldn't be more ecstatic to open up her up and see the simplicity and organization.

I was convicted and once again confronted with the reality that if I don't see it, I won't use it. So, I organized my favorite flavors into this 10 compartment storage system and I drop 1-2 bags in it right before I go to bed.

My favorite flavors lately have been Lipton's White Peach Mango and Tazo's Green Ginger or Passion Fruit -- but any light, fruity herbal teas are going to taste amazing.

  • Add lemon and/or lime juice based on your preference to take the tea from a mild flavor to something more tart and flavorful.
  • Add stevia (as needed) to sweeten things up.
  • Add just a DASH of cayenne pepper if you're looking for a spicy drink.
  • Add a splash of Apple Cider Vinegar for added health benefits and a really tart kick.
  • Play around with different combinations based on your mood.

Another reason I LOVE this carafe in particular is because it has two spouts, and one filters the herbs and tea bags - and yes, I absolutely carry it around the house and drink directly from it. It's mine for the day, everyday ;)

Once you've dropped in your fresh mint and tea into the water, you can take it further and still not compromise on the calorie count of your healthy drink! Why consume sugar if you don't have to? And if you're GOING to, wouldn't you want to save it for something more fun?

It steeps, while I sleep and I wake up with no excuses to hydrate.

So, what about you? How do you normally flavor your water? What else do you struggle with when it comes to staying hydrated? Have any tips for me? ;)
